Cannot backup Ayumi Hamasaki DVD

I just purchased a copy of an Ayumi Hamasaki DVD on ebay that was released this year. According to the box and auction site, the dvd is region free. It play fine on a stand alone dvd player, but Windows does not recognize the disc when it is inserted, and I get a warning that it is not formatted or not a format compatible with windows. The dvd drive is a TDK 440N DVD-/+ R/RW. I tried it in another machine, and it sees the disc, but will not let me copy any files, even when using DVD Decrypter, DVD X Copy Platinum, Any DVD or Smart Ripper. If I play it on the other machine (which has a Sony DVD-ROM) it plays up until chapter 9 (about 25 minutes into the disc), and then freezes. It plays continuously in the stand alone DVD player and goes to the end without any errors or freeze ups. And all the software says it is not encrypted, but yet it still can not copy the files, wheter using copy software, or just trying to copy in Windows explorer. I'm wondering if perhaps there is a new encryption technology that prevents dvd's from being read by pc dvd-roms, or if anyone else has had this problem. I would really like to watch this disc on my lcd screen, so if anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Additional info

Just like this thread: http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=63987 I get the same error, cyclic redundancy error. I think a new encryption method may be in use, it is quite possible that new copy protection techniques are being utilized. As with his problem, mine always freezes in the same place too, no matter what app I am using. And also this is with a brand new disc. There are no defects to the dic's surface at all, and others that I have talked to in Asia are saying they get the same results when trying to back up any Avex Trax discs (the recording company for Ayumi Hamasaki). Maybe it should be looked into?....

And still some more info

I am really doing some homework tonight. Lolz. Here's another site on my research. Apparently, Blindwrite 5 can do the rip.
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=220732
I am ripping the dvd right now as I type, but one thing to note, I think the disc has bad sectors just before the end of the first 01_1.vob file and continues through the rest of the disc, as ripping it has so far been a VERY slow process, about 2-6k a second, but it seems to be able to bypass the bad sectors and keep going. The software has reported no read errors. I'll post the results of this experiment when it finishes.

Awww man I really dont wanna have to buy Passion OTC just to test this out myself but it seems that maybe that particular movie may have this new protection.

Keep us informed, generalplot.

Update to experiment

Well, 10 hours after I started ripping, and it has just cleared the 1 gig mark, and still dragging. I'm not sure if Blindwrite can rip this disc or not, but I don't find it feasable to let it spend a week ripping, just to possibly wind up with a bad ISO image if the rip doesn't go right. One thing that I found out while searching, is that someone noted that the Ring Protection system can not be used in a daul layer commercial disc, and that would make sense. I was wondering why my Ayumi Hamasaki DVD was only 4.18 GB, yet the entire video is over 2 hours long. For those that want to know, the disc is Ayumi Hamasaki: Museum-30th single collection live. A little strange I think, as this disc was rated as one of her best. Perhaps the reason nobody has it on the P2P is that nobody else can seem to rip it either. With any luck, I hope to be the first.

Gotcha

I totally understand Tyler. I'm trying some new profiles also that I downloaded for Blindwrite, I'll let you know how that turns out.

Still can't get it

Tried another DVD-ROM a Toshiba (older model) and was able to copy all dvd files except for 01_3.vob, using no software at all. All apps give the CRC Cyclic Redundancy Check error. If anyone has any other ideas on how to copy a dvd protected with bad sectors in the middle of the disc like that, I'd sure like to hear it. Blindwrite wouldn't even begin to read with the older dvd rom and I tried the newest version of AnyDVD, and no dice.

Im willing to bet that its probably a problem with the disc and not a copy protection at all.

I don't believe it is damaged

That's what I thought at first. As I stated before: on the stand alone dvd player it plays all the way through. Plus, as a test, I played it on that older dvd rom using Power DVD, and it plays all the way through without freezing. I would assume if the disc was damaged, that it would freeze at the presumably damaged part on the disc. But twice it played through with no problems. After playing it twice, I tried to rip it again, and the results are still the same with that. I'm gonna give DVDRemake a shot. If that doesn't work, then I think I'm all out of options for the present moment.

In all my time of backing up dvd movies, Ive come across a couple of discs that do this. Theyve even played all the way through in my standalone as well. But when I tried to back them up they just wont.

I now just sell these games on ebay and purchase another one. Every single time after that Ive been able to back the new dvd up.

Well, the thing that leads me to believe that mine has this new protection is that all apps report that there is no CSS protection anywhere on the disc at all. And since this is a commercial DVD, I would think that the company would use SOME form of protection to prevent copying. Maybe they went the route of using the bad sectors instead of the traditional CSS. I've talked to 3 other people so far that have this disc, and they all get stuck at exactly the same place that I do. I'll wait and see if Slysoft comes out with a new version that can work around this.
