If it will boot a PSX back-up the laser is able to read back-up media still (at least CD-R media anyway) and the chip is working. What may be the issue then is that one of the wires required for PS2 booting may have come loose. If you can boot a DVD movie in PSX mode it will simply verify chip is working. Post your results when you can.

Did you boot from PSX mode or did you just insert the dvd, close the tray and it loaded?

I put it in PSX mode

If it boots from PSX mode then i would check for a loose wire, odds are one came loose.
