That's why I like the Matrix Infinity- it detects what kind of media you put in. No boot methods, no worries. I think you'll just have to live without cheats, or you could load up the original, apply cheats, save, and then boot the backup and load the save. Or just download a save game with the cheats.

I already told him this in an email, but I find it very strange that it boots at all in PSX mod. I mean have you ever tried booting a PS2 game with your chip in PSX mode???!!! Well you get the RSOD! So something is definitely strange here, cuz isn’t GS4 for PS2 games only, meaning when you boot it up in PS2 mode you see the PS2 screen? Maybe there is a GS4 for the PSX and he is using the wrong one. I'm not to wise with the cheat devises but I do have GS3 and it works just fine with the Magic V, so I would think GS4 would also.

Try this, turn off your chip then boot up the GS4 and post which screen comes up, the PSX style screen or the PS2 style screen. I know some times these cheat devices modify the boot screen but you get the general idea of what I’m saying.
