To solve the problem, get a 3rd party HDD. Maxtor are the best ones to use with PS2. Then use HD Loader. The max supported size is 137GB

Because it has a way of detection that its there. If you get a third party HDD such as a Maxtor 120GB it wont detect your modchip and when you boot the HDD loader the first time it will ask if you want to format the HDD to the PS2 file system then your ready to go. Just keep the official Sony HDD around for when you want to play FFXI or whatever online, just swap out the third party one with the original.
