I can't say that my program/media/burner combination is the best or only successful solution, but I use:

Pioneer 107 Burner
Ritek or PioData DVD Media
"AnyDVD" and "CloneDVD" programs in tandem to read, compress, and burn the DVD backup.

Search this forum for "AnyDVD" and "CloneDVD" items. You'll find lots of information and advice.
