Kinda sorta true. The laser gets closer to your disc in the vertical position because you have a freefloating laser.

If you have it horizontal then the laser has gravity pulling it away from the disc leaving less scratches.

Just wanted to mention that when your ps2 is vertical your laser does read it a tad better.
