It should not really matter, if you are burning "on the fly" (The DVD your backing up is in a seperate dvd-rom) then, do a 1x. But, if you copy the DVD Files from the DVD to your hdd then it should not really matter. just the slower you burn the less likely that an error will occur.
P.S. Have you read Tyler's CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD combo sticky?
