i am not sure about the sams choice's dvd player, but if you have missed one point; 90% of home dvd players won't play divx, xvid, etc... because they are not standardized and they need quite good processor for decoding

1. it's not about the program (well, in this case it is, but the vision just made a simple decode which you could have done with many different program) ,
the video clip you got was packed with e.g. divx and that cannot be used in (S)VCDs
so, nero decoded it so that it meets the standards

2. conversion makes the picture always worse and i guess nero is not the best en/decoder
