What do I use to make DivX files play on a home DVD player?

i am not sure about the sams choice's dvd player, but if you have missed one point; 90% of home dvd players won't play divx, xvid, etc... because they are not standardized and they need quite good processor for decoding

Mpeg files were using Nero Burning Rom plus the Mpeg files only used about 375 mb of disc space were as the video clip file I tested Nero Vision Express with had to be shrunk down just to fit on a 700 mb disc, originally it was only 220 mb.

1. it's not about the program (well, in this case it is, but the vision just made a simple decode which you could have done with many different program) ,
the video clip you got was packed with e.g. divx and that cannot be used in (S)VCDs
so, nero decoded it so that it meets the standards

2. conversion makes the picture always worse and i guess nero is not the best en/decoder
