Hardware Question

Ok, I was wondering if different model number ps2 parts are compatable with different model parts, for example, would everything except the motherboard from a v7 ps2 work with a older version motherboard?

k thanks,

I already had a ps2 and I found a extremely cheap one which I tried to install a modchip in but it didnt work, this was a v7 ps2. My cousin was looking on ebay at the like $30 parts ps2's that are like v5-6, to get a motherboard to replace the broken one.
