XBox vs. PS2 backups

I want to get my kids a console gaming system for Christmas. One factor in my decision as to whether to get a PS2 or an XBox is whether it is possible to easily make backups of games. I have a Pioneer DVD-RW drive in my computer. Will either the XBox or PS2 allow me to use backup copies of games without installing a mod chip?

If a mod chip is necessary for both systems, is one system substantially easier than the other to install a mod chip?

With or without a mod chip, will either system allow you to simply insert the backup disc and have the game start up without having to go through any additional steps?

xbox is definately easier to install. For the most part. It has 9 wires to install, vs the ps2's 20 i think. And the points on the xbox are nowher near as small as the ps2 (except for one, which is still larger). There are ones for ps2 with less wires, and even some wth no soldering needed, but they need a boot disk to work.

If your getting it for your kid though, then ps2 might be the better choice. Xbox doesn't have too many games aimed at the younger audience.

Would a modded XBox boot a backup copy of a game the same as an unmodded XBox would boot an original copy of a game, or are there some extra steps required?

Do you know of any reliable US sources for premodded XBox consoles?

Games boot as normal. If you go through the link Bighap left you on the other post in the ps2 forums those games will boot as normal on a premodded ps2 as well.

Just to be sure I understand...If I buy an XBox with a modchip (such as the X-Ecuter2.3 Lite) installed, I will be able to back up the game DVDs using my PC DVD-RW drive, and then direct boot those backups on the XBox, thereby keeping the original DVDs stored safely away. I will not need to do anything such as network the XBox with my PC. Is that all correct?

Is there a particular ripping/burning program(s) that works best for this task?

Actually backing up an Xbox game is a bit more complex that what you stated. You would have to read the game using the Xbox, FTP it to your PC's HDD then burn.

With a PS2 all you have to do is put the dvd or cd in your PC like you would a music disc and copy.

yes backing up your xbox title is not too complicated but there is a few extra steps you must take, first of all the xbox reads the dvd's from the outside in, therfore you must take the image your xbox made, and turn all the data in the opposite place so the xbox reads it correctly. there is just a simple tool you must use in conjunction with DOS and after that you just use record now max or nero to burn your iso.

Hello . As u may r may not know, the xbox is the eziest system 2 mod by far. Now when it comes 2 making backups thats another story. After your system is modded, u then have to install a dashboard (Menu system). That would then allow u to Backup (rip) Games from your xbox to your pc. It's not that hard 2 do. Now there're complete tutorials on how 2 do this @ www.xbox-scene.com . Btw I would suggest u getting a larger hard drive for your box. That way once that game is installed on your xbx hd, there's no way the kids can even mess it up. all they have 2 do then is boot up, select game, & play. Less wear & tear on your dvd drive, less hassle for the disc (orig & backups). The Disc wont get scratched, lost or stolen because everthing is on the hard drive. The PS2 doesnt have that option or abililty as of yet , but the xbox route has been tested for over a year. U can purchase just about anytype of hard drive (just get 80gb or more). That should hold more games than needed. Also with the mod u can run emulated console games like ; SuperNes, Genesis (SEGACD, 32x) , GameBoy Advance, Nes, PS1 (yes even PS1 games), NeoGeo (Arcade), CapCom (Arcade), TurboGrafx (CD), Nintend64, Mame. etc.. Now I dont know about u , but your kids would enjoy all of these things from 1 machine. Now with the emulators, u can have hundreds (no joke) hundreds of tittles 2 choose from.
And u can run all of these from your xbox HD. No DVDs (Disc s) required. PS2 cant do that right now . So , go with box . I did .

I went with both PS2 and Xbox. PS2 has more games and Xbox currently has more features.

Hello , Thats fine by u, not by me. Sure there r some ps2 games that i like 2 play, but a Modded xbox will out do a modded ps2 anyday of the week. More games eh.. more games don not make a better system. Just like i stated b4 the emulations themselves out do the total combinations of all the ps2/ps1 games combined (i havent even included the number xbox games). I got a box for the following reasons.

1. Durability ; the box can take & dishout more damage than a PS2.

2. Storage : I can put any size drive in my box & never worry about my DVD games getting scratched stolen or loss, also the load times on a hard drive is awesome). & less wear & tear on my DVD drive.

3. The games: sure PS2 has some great games, but so does the XBOX. Not to mention all of the available emulations thats out for it (totally awesome). My genre of games are fighters (Mostly 2D). So with the emulation (NeoGeo, CapCom, KI/1&2) I can play all of them on 1 machine . Cant do that on ps2. Also DVD playback is also available when u mod a xbox (Dont have to buy the DVD remote).

4. Ez 2 repair; I've worked on all game systems (including arcade machines) . It's ezier 2 work on the box than PS2.

5. HardWare/ Case Modification; Dude have u seen the way some of these guys customize their box !!!!

6. NetWorking ; I can link my box 2 my pc & copy files between them for updates, games, etc.. no memory card required (PS2 has to have a memory card) thats another piece of hardware i dont have 2 keep up with (especially with kids).

I can go on & on But this is my opinion on y i would go with the box.

yes, but the fact remains that an xbox, as a game machine, does not have a veriety of games for all ages like the ps2, or as much support from 3rd party developers. Yes they both have great games and chances are there are enouph good ones to play that will make you forget about the crappy ones, for both systems.

And xbox does have he best emulation, no contest. Old school systems play flawlessly and if it weren't for the 64mb limit on memory, it would play the larger mame roms just as fast.


And the xbox is durable until you move it. It has an hdd which is one of the most non-durable parts of a pc. You can drp the xbox 5 feet above the ground on a carpet floor and the hdd is likely to break. btw, the power supplies burn out from constant unpligging ang pluggin in (cracks the solder that hols the plug onto the power suply board).

bah it wouldn't matter, and im too tired to go into detail about the xbox dvd-roms and how they differ from pc ones, but it is laser and firmware that is different, not how it read media.

1. Yeah probably, but ps2 is nicer to carry.

2. $$$, anyways who cares what happens to your dvd drive if you can afford a 220gig HDD. Surely you can afford a $100 new dvd drive.

3. Personally I cant stand fighter games. They never really change except for characters. Heck even the characters dont change by much, japanese chicks with large breasts, big fat guys/bears, or the occasional Russian guys. All the fight scenarios havent changed in years. Really "I" can go on and on for hours on this subject but lets leave it at that.

4. Well the only real problem with ps2 has been the laser. I really an not sure how many things can go wrong with an xbox but I dont see the PS2 as a big problem.

Hello , Every Game system I purchased i give it a drop test from about 5ft. Both of my boxes passed with no flaws. Try doing that with a PS2. when i had to move to another house (Last yr), My box was dropped several times & it still plays my games with no problems with the same 120gb hard drive. My power supply still works no problem. I dont have 2 baby my xbox. It holds its on as far as punishment goes. I've plugged/unplugged my box hundreds of times ..no prob. Its a well built rugged machine.

1. dont make a mistake & drop it

2. The point of Hd is to run the games from the hd instead of the dvd drive. less wear & tear on the DVD drive. Also u will make mistake & accidently get scratched discs from playing them.

3. Kool ..thats your opinion. But a majority of people like fighters. Killer instinct is a classic fighter. There's no other fighter game like ki1/2.
