It's working now!
Nothing suggested so far was working (no USB patch for me, as I run W2K, no relevnt game patches), so I was about to uninstall the game to clear out some HD space, but decided to give it a last try. On a hunch I simply tried with 16bpp/640x480, and was able to create a profile, etc. and play. I have now bumped it back up to 32bpp and a higher resolution, and it still works fine. HTH
