It's not the refresh rate. I once got the game to run with the actual CD (it mostly fails on my system, because SecuRom doesn't like Thinkpads), and it ran... so my refresh rate and other settings are fine.
If I run the real EXE (5MB), it works maybe one time in twenty, sometimes.. If I run the nocd EXE (3MB), it plays the intro movies, then crashes.
