Yes, a crack is a way to disable copy protections. Cracks are either cracked executables (which you copy over the old ones with the same name) or patches, which change a game executable so the copy protection code gets skipped. There are fixed exe's (cracks with which you can use any backup cd, but which still need a cd in the drive) and nocd's (which don't need any cd in the drive to play). You can also use programs like Blindwrite and Alcohol120% to make backups, or make an image on the hard disk and emulate that as a kind of virtual cdrom.
