Where did you connect the ground wire for the amp? On a wire in the car, on the floorpan, or on a bolt near the tailights?
This would be my first guess.... The best way to check is to take a voltmeter and see how man volts you have at the amp, and then see how may volts you have at the amp while someone hits the brakes....
