Firmware wouldn't change the ability to recognize your drive. If you change your firmware you losse any warranty you have. It is really up to you. I personally think the ability to record to +r/+rw is pointless and would have got a -r/-rw drive in the first place. The Pioneer A05 is an excellent choice. The price has dramatically dropped due to the release of the multiformat A06 being released. You can get one for $180-$190. I recommend
