thanks for your help guys, yeah I have the "no-cd fix ", so it's not a prob to run the game without media, it was a copy cd I was trying to make - I'll try the clone drive way just coz it sounds interesting but will it work with future patches without "fixed" EXEcutables.

As a spin off from my attempts, while looking into SecureROM I've discoved that the latest versions of SecureROM will detect if you have a clone drive & refuse to run if they find one - even with the genuine disk!!!

setup a vitual drive with CloneCD and try playing devestation ( if you can stand it!!! ) with the GENUINE CD (I've only tried the UK release) and see what I mean. - Boxed copies won't run with the CloneCD tray installed

Seems to me Copy protection bypass for Software copied for the purpose of backup is turning into a tug-of-war and the corporates have just added a new teammember. Sadly, NO-CD cracks look like the future.

P.S.

The whole thing is kind of ironic, as making BACKUP copies of owned software is legal ( in the UK anyway, I dunno about elsewhere) - But no-CD cracks alter or completely replace copy-writed code which IS illegal and the game makers don't seem to be doing anything about that - if they could, (these crack groups are ****-hot talented - hope you guys have good high paid jobs) .
