v4 inside a v7 check it out
I just received a PS2 from a guy my brother works with. He had on before and some magic chips he had ordered(turned out to be clones) He had another guy try to install on it and he totally f**ked it up. Soldered pins together and cracked one resistor and totally broke another clean off the board. Anyway he purchased a new one from TJ Maxx. I opened the box and checked the numbers, v7 no suprise. However, as i opened it I noticed an extreme amount of dust, like a two year old PS2 that has never been cleaned. I look on the side of the DVD drive and low and behold there is the battery. At this point I am like what the hell. Get it apart and it is a GH-010 MoBo with 030 bios. This would be a v4. My only real consern is I have looked at Charlie's PS2 version identifcation guide on PS2newz and this combo is listed as having Messiah problems. Is there any way a Messiah will work on this console? How could this have happened? I checked the warrenty sticky as I peeled it off and it showed no signs of prior removal.
Here are the numbers on the shell: SCPH-39001 AU2682716 Date Code: 2D PT426827168

A hair dryer takes it off no problem. It was probably reaplied with some adhesive. Why don't you have the guy exchange it for a new one?

I probably will. A hair dryer even takes off the black seal on the back of the PS2? I know the seal on the box itself is easy to get off. The black seal on the back of the PS2 reveals the word void over and over is much harder to remove ecspecially without revealing a few of the voids. You know of my knowledge of the switcheroo. If that is what has happened it was better than I could ever imagine doing soomething of the like.

I have heard of people doing everything with a hair dryer, but I am not exactly sure how it is done. I am guessing it the the bending of the sticker that causes the voids to appear. Maybe sliding somthing thin under it like a razor blade might do the trick. But what do I know.

After testing the laser I am positive that some one did a switch. The laser is shot. Cannot read DVD or Cd based games. It can sometimes read an audio CD but not an audio CD-R. This is going to make it tuff. He wanted to give this system to his kids for easter.

The laser could just be dirty, but if you can still return it, take it back. Think of the poor children.

Actually yes it is wrong. It's illegal. But there is nothing wrong with returning this piece of crap.

Don't know why it took me so long to figure out but I know why the switch looked so good. Since this was not a botched install, it was just a dead ps2, they only had to swap the sticker that has the bar code on it. The sticker that creates the void was never peeled off.

Nope, the void sticker is made of clear plastic with like a black ink in the sticky part and some parts don't stick to the plastic revealing the void. The bar code sticker is made of metal witha plastic layer on top and is quite easy to remove once you get it started. Not that I would really know

u say he just purchased it new
blacken the viod sticker and replace as previously explianed or remove seal from another ps2 carefully hairdryer and razor blade/stanley take the ****ed laser ps2 back (he only just bought it) show shop how bad the laser is ps2 origanals, cdr music dvdr film if they say ps2 not meant to play them tell them to try them in another ps2 99% will play all fine there should be no argument u should get the ps2 replaced ps u should always check the ps2 origanals cdr music dvdr films before removing the viod sticker it save alot of hassle

Just gave it to my brother to return to the guy tonight. Thought he might be a little disapointed but he said that he thought of doing it when his other PS2 got busted.

That’s sneaky of them to do that.
Why don’t you run down to Circuit City and buy a new PS2. Go home stick the dead PS2 back in the new PS2’s box. Take it back to Circuit City and say “Hey this is the 3rd PS2 I’ve bought here that doesn’t work. I want my money back.” She/He gives you’re your $200 back and you go home and mod the new one. I killed 2 PS2s before I finly got my chip in right. I just took them back and said they didn't power on (witch they didn't after I got done with them ).
