Well to answer a few of your questions:

1) You dont have to use a router or hub, you can get a crossover cable, costs between $10 and $20. Use a direct connection from your PC to Xbox and use a FTP program to connect. There are lots of good tutorials on this one.

2) I dont think you could ever get a Xbox drive to run on your PC. I havent looked closely but I would assume the drive in the Xbox runs on a different format than your standard IDE or SCSI drives in your PC. Besides if it reads the disc differently, your PC would have a hard time understanding the data being read.

3) Getting an Xbox modded by a professional is the way to go. Don't do it yourself unless you are really comfortable with a soldering iron and electronics configuration. The $80 you spend to get a pro to do it is better than the $200 to get a new box.
