You sure you on Win98? Not heard that problem with Win98, just WinXP.
Do these funny things happen when you install from the original cd, or just the backup?? If not, its a bad burn on your part. Have you got all updates from Windows Update? Try updating your graphics card drivers and maybe updating DirectX.
