I just installed a Magic 3 into my v.4 PS2. It was a pain in the ass, but I feel confident in my install. I was running a NEO-DVD (2.6 I think) with no problems.
Now original DVD games boot fine. But my CD backups don't boot (red screen). All of my CD backups were made with Nero on Memorex CD-R discs. I do have 1 CD backup that does work; Contra - Shatterd Soldier. It was made with CloneCD on a Memorex CD-R (it's also patched). Is this a case of software ? Is Nero the culprit here ? I tried copying a Nero backup with CloneCD, but no dice (red screen). Will using CloneCD for all my CD backups (from original source) solve my problem ? I'm about to install my Pioneer 104. Hopefully I can make a good DVD-R backup. I'll be using a Maxell DVD-RW for testing.

Yes, use CloneCD. You shouldn't even have to patch it if you use CloneCD, unless you are applying an NTSC to Pal or vice versa patch.

I had the exact same problem alot of my cd-r games didnt work for some reason all memorex also. I just went out and bought some different cd-r dont use the memorex ones they made my machine make alot noise. I finally bought some sony cd-rs although any kind will prob work. I then used CDRWIN to back up with and they all played just fine except for 3 or so games still got red screen. But as you stated U GET THE RED SCREEN LIKE I DID. Hope this helps (PS dont know if my machine reads cd-rw but dude cd-rs are cheap) buy few and try.
