I'll put reply here for benefit of others.
Lesson 1: Search the Forum.

Lesson 2: Detailed step-by-step instructions are for you to organise as. Because my reply is lengthy, you can see why nobody is going to post step-by-step details here nor indeed by e-mail. You've just got to get through it like the rest of us.

I'll assume that you have an original game to copy such as one you have bought and wish to protect. You will need a modchip for your PS/PS2, copying software & the right PC hardware for the burning job. I recommend the Yamaha 2100S (or E) CD-RW for optimum compatibility for read & write with the recommended copying software. If you take an EIDE connected burner, ensure that it is placed on the secondary IDE channel else the device will slow down the hard disk & buffer under-runs are likely to occur.

Go to http://www.megagames.com or http://www.sgt-dan.com/ or http://www.psxcopyworld.co.uk for detailed advice.

The basics are as follows:

1/
You’ll need to get the PS/PS2 chipped to allow backups to play. Go to the website http://www.playstationmods.com whence you can buy a mod. An internal mod is recommended & if you live in the UK, they'll do it for you if you are not a soldering whizzo. You could also visit http://www.modchip.com for their solution.

2/
You will then need copying software & patching software. I recommend just two programs and in my view you need them both: they are CLONECD & CDR-WIN. The former makes 1:1 copies (you'll need the tutorial from one of the above mentioned sites). Thus if you have an unprotected game (megagames.com lists games for which there are patches & the type of patch required; you could also visit http://www.sgt-dan.com/ and http://www.ps2ownz.com for lists/databases of games & their patches). If the game is of the same denomination as your PS/PS2 (e.g. PAL), CLONECD does the job perfectly. CDR-WIN stages the CD copy to your PC's hard disk so that you can patch the game as necessary (per PPF-O-MATIC.EXE downloaded from megagames.com together with the patches); then you burn the game back to the CD with CDR-Win.

3/
For the above to work properly, your CD-R MUST be compatible with the burning programs. The sites from which you download the programs list the compatible devices. CDR-WIN requires an ASPI layer to be present and this can be downloaded from http://www.goldenhawk.com

4/
If you copy games from one TV standard (like NTSC) to play on another standard (like PAL) then the game may or may not play in colour. There are patches to change this or you could buy a convertor that sits between your TV and the PS/PS2. I have one of these because I hate patching & the patches don't always work.

5/
Your biggest challenges will be DVD games & Protected Games. DVD games can't be easily backed up at present (search this forum under the keyword DVD RIP). Protected games are likely to be an increasing issue. Megagames, Sgt Dan and PS2ownz are usually on the ball here but for EA games, go to http://www.eapatcher.com. Sgt Dan's site describes how to boot from a DVD backup using the NEO2 modchip solution; it doesn't say how DVDs have been copied - presumably using the software supplied with the burner. Nero 5.5 will burn DVDs in a suitable fashion but I haven't tried it. The cheapest DVD burner & the cost of media make it still worthwhile to buy the damn DVD game!

6/
Finally an explanation of why the foregoing is necessary. Sony have gone to a lot of trouble to stop people backing up their games. Sony accomplish this by going through some clever pre-boot stuff that identifies from the surface of the CD/DVD whether or not the media is original. So we have to boot with compliant media (developed, for example, with the Sony OEM kit), pause the process, swap in the copy game (patched for NTSC/PAL or copy protection defeat), & carry on.

This forum has nearly 20,000 subscribers. I'd bet that the bulk of them started off like you. It's not that difficult when you've done it once, especially with CloneCD.

Good luck & I hope this reply has been helpful.

aka_khan,Try using the search function to answer questions. Also Charlies post covers everything needed to copy games you may want to read it carefully, All of us was a newbie at some point and reading is the best way to learn.

aka_khan, I'm glad you chose not to give up. Warlock has been at this for months longer than I and helped me and many of the other Premium Members on the forum to move from a zero position to a more knowledgable state. The good news is that it doesn't take more than about 4 hours to get past the basics and it usually works first time.

As to downloading games from the web - well 650MB is an awful lot of modem time. And if you search the forum, you'll see that just as many questions come up about unplayable downloads and, unlike backup situations, nobody can help you out.

are all ps2 games protected?
ANSWER: No in the strict sense. http://www.ps2ownz.com has a database of games and their patches. The patch type indicates whether or not games are protected. "Protected" means the ability to detect a copy.
2/
and wut do i set my CDr-win settings at so i can burn the game?
ANSWER: Use the defaults. RAW on reading is important but unimportant on writing.
3/
I have a Mitshitsu or something it is a company owned by Panasonic i think 8x8x32..is it good for burning?
ANSWER: Matsushita is not one of my devices (I prefer Yamaha). CloneCD (the other important burner for PS2) does not list a Matsushita device as asupported. CDRWin only lists the very basic 7503 CD-R device (8 x 20). I think you have the DVD-ROM (8571-B) with CD-R burner. When you run CDRWin it'll tell you which devices it recognises.
4/
Where should i go for more specific instructions on make a backup? Start at http://www.psxcopyworld.co.uk and click the TUTORIALS tab.
5/
How do i know if my burner is edie or what not how can i check?should i ask the guy who installed it?
ANSWER: If it's the Matsushita drive 8571-B then it's IDE. In Windows Device Manager look up the properties for the device. It will tell you all.
6/
I got CDRWin 4.0 full version paid for and everthing and i got CLONECD 3.0.8.2 paid for and everthing now i am almost there to learning how to burn games yipee!!
ANSWER: See (3) above re compatibility. Try it - the software will report if the burner is recognised.

ANSWER: Your PS2 is NTSC and the games are NTSC-U (coded for US/Canada).

CDRWIN says nothing when i startup but when i go into settings or something in devices i think it says i have "0:0:0 Matshita CD-RW CW-7586 1.00" & if i go down the tiny list it says "0:1:0 Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-114 2.03" is this what you were talking about saying that i have DVD-ROM or something. and are these compatable?should i test by burning a ps2 game or an thing from CD Audio or copy something? and should i also test colnecd to check if it works with my burner?should i just copy any CD?or should it be psx,ps2,or anything?also if it works is this a good sign to be being able to bunr ps2 games?

CDRWin will tell you what it finds when you try to read or burn something. So here's what I suggest. Put a CD in the DVD ROM and ask CDRWin (and/or CloneCD) to copy it to the CDR you place into the 7586. If all devices are recognised by CDRWin, then move forward by executing the copy. Then try the result. Take a simple unprotected game that won't need patching. Let us know the outcome.

Your drive is compatable with cdrwin but not clone cd, [get your money back]. If you want to try to copy something try a PSX, PS2 game, You may be able to copy audio fine but not PSX, PS2 games. Do not try with a cdrw, use a cdr, cdrw's will not work. if you need a tutorial on cdrwin try www.psxcopyworld.co.uk, Deano's site, Again, Charlie has posted all of this info above. If you seriously want to learn about copying games do a little research at the sites posted above and use the SEARCH FUNCTION!.... Good luck, Aka_khan..
