dude u should be asking this in the PS2 games forum, chances are u'll get more replies in there.

Does the machine boot original games on dvd or cd? How about cd based backups? Do u have any friends with a modded ps2 that could loan u one of their games to try?

My guess would be that the chip isn't installed correctly.
