I had the same problem with bf1942 and zonealarm, it was driving me NUTS , when this happened, I got a black screen and ALL I could do was switch off the pc, nothing else allowed me to switch to the desktop and answer the zonealarm dialog. Now I know about it, I make sure to add bf1942.exe manually to zonealarm before trying to run it for the first time.
