Dungeon Siege multiplayer?

I am running Dungeon siege version 1.1.1460. I can't seem to get the game running on multiplayer with a friend runngn the same evrsion on any sort of multiplayer option, not network, internet or zone match.

If I want multiplyer, must I buy the game or am I doing something wrong?
