I have just got a messiah chip for my PS2 and now would like to back up some games. Most people seem to say that the Pioneer DVD writer is the best one, is there any others out there slightly cheaper that are just as good.
Cheers .

Read the rules, dont ask where to get games. And yes the A04 is the best in my opinion.

Is there anyone out there who has a DVD writer other than the Pioneer A04 that works fine for backing up PS2 games

Panasonic DVD-Ram which writes DVD-R as well works. Basically any drive that does DVD-R will likely work used with right combination of software..Also most DVd-R drives cost over $200.00 so you might as well get the Pioneer since it will $50.00 more..If it was $100.00 I can understand but for $50.00 more you're getting a insurance..Or get the Sony DVD-R+R drive which does -R and +R. it burns -R at 4x and +R at 2x. RW's of both on 2x. It's around $285.00 approx. Try researching through some of the threads B4 posting a topic on this which was covered while back..
