This is definitly a fake.

I work in the telecom industry and can tell you that you are not going to be able to hook two modems together and get them to talk to each other. You need to put a very specialized device known as a TAS in between them to simulate the telephone line. Things like dial tone, correct voltages, ring signal, etc. must be present for your modem to function....

Now if he said that the gamecube was at a friends house I might have believed it, but there is no such thing as a "crossover" cable for modems.
