Yep sounds about right
The disc from which you are reading sounds like there is some damage or it is scratched,try giving it a good clean with a lint cloth and some meths but don't go crackers with it,and make sure it's totally dry before you place it back in your psx.
Otherwise you could buy a disc repair kit(available from you local muic/computer store) and give that a try,it's worked for me more than once.
