Black CD-r's

hello everyone,
my question for tonight is what are the black cd-r's really for? and mainly, what is thier quality and compatibility with players and recorders? i ask because other then the music cd-rs..the black ones are the only cd-rs i can find with a tough top cover. i am sick of the top of my recorded cd's pealing up and flaking away.
thanks for your input in advance.
