was it a small chip with 8 pins?
if so, that's the neo 2.2. without the capacitor, the constant pulsing of the signal will damage and eventually destroy the dvd laser.. which is likely what happened to you. you can try adjusting the laser A LITTLE, but make sure you do install the cap on pin 2. otherwise the dvd laser will die very soon.. be prepared to need one within the next months anyways, because the damage is already done.
