The only thing I can think of is the firmware, or a failing mechanism (greese dries up). Some discs also don't like recording at a very low speed like 2x.
Flash to the latest firwmare so you can rule this out. There's always one or two brands that don't work well with certain writers - my traxdata would screw up Samsung discs until I flashed writer's firmware to latest update. Hope it works out for you.
