Renegade: working backup....sort of??

I finally broke down and bought the game and have been trying to make a fully functioning backup using a lite-on 32*12*40. I have managed to get it to accept the cd through installation and game start-up but when I try to load a multiplayer game through gamesspy I get a cd check error?? Anybody know why this is happening and can it be fixed or are backups just not going to work online at all??
