NHL 2001 crshes when i wanna connect to play online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have nhl 2001 4 pc and i downloaded the most recent patch for it .the patch warning says if you dont delete all files called *******.GAM
then your game will crash.I did delete any files
called (with ending .GAM)and it still crashes when i wanna connect to play online with a friend .

WHATS THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im sure i deleted all files called .GAM--------whats the prob----its also affecting (i believe if this is the problem)NBA 2001
