please help, drive no longer reads back-ups!

can anyone help out?
my dvd/cd drive will no longer read my back-ups and its doing my head in, lol.
i tried formating and reinstalling ect but still no joy.
after phoneing tec support they said there is nothing wrong with it because it plays originals! yet my friend has the exact same system as mine and my back-ups work fine on his!
