I'm having trouble patching my backed up version of Hitman... help!?

I have a Hitman v1.0 installed on my computer from a backed up copy of the game. I didn't have to use the gcw hitman.exe for the game to work. After downloading and installing the new v1.92 patch I am unable to run Hitman. It gives an error saying that Hitman.exe could not be loaded because it's an invalid win32 application file. Do I need to make copies of my original hitman.exe and any other files before patching? Any ideas are appreciated.
