neo4 won't read ps2 blue cd-roms

I just rented and copied ICO us-ntsc with clonecd with no protection settings.

My ps2 (us-ver. 4) reads the original as a ps1 game. It takes about 3-4 times for it to come up with the blue cd icon (ps2-cd-rom). The backup always comes up as a ps1 cd.

I just chipped with neo4, everything ok before and after: audio and ps1 cd-r's and origs., ps2 dvds and dvd movie origs. (no dvdr's yet), mem cards and controllers but my ps2 is brand new and I don't have any other original ps2 blue cd-roms.

I re-copied and used clonecd's protection settings and got the same result. Actually, the copies work, if I swap w\ the orig., they just won't boot by themselves. When it finally loads the orig. ICO, the laser makes noise like if it were a 5-year-old ps1!

It makes the same noise with the backup. Any help greatly appreciated, thanx in advance...Later tried other ps2 blues (madden 2k2, ncaa 2k2, others) with same result.

Should I tweak the laser? (calibration)...it's brand new though...
