Sound like a bad burn or faulty patch, it doesn't sound like mod-detection but just in case, after booting your exchange cd, press select and bring up the game shark feature and try entering the enable codes.
Cool Boarders 2001: D00B11CC 023A 800B11CE 1000 OR D00B1144 000A 800B1146 1000 Quake 2 is not protected.
