PS1 isn't my bag so I'm not on solid ground here. But as nobody else has replied, perhaps this might make sense based on my PS2 knowledge. By the time you are into playing the backup game, the modchip should have done its job and shouldn't be involved in any aspect of your problem. I can't shed any light on the true causes I'm afraid. Maybe a copying expert from the forum would know.
