I have backed up the rental version of this game with no problems using the paradox crack only patch (file name pdx-r3uc.zip).
Most likely your problem is that you copied the game to your hard drive at a fast speed and corrupted the image, i would recommend that you copy the orignal to your HD again at 1x speed to make sure that it does not get corrupted again. Anyways hope this helps.
