Can PSone play games without boot disc.

When the PSONE is chipped, up until now I used the 4 wire standard mod chip, I have noticed that nearly all games need to be booted with the boot disc first. Could this be because I have used Bootedit on the backups? replacing the std PSX logo with a funky design.
Or would the new 7 wire stealth multimode chip correct this?
anyone throw some light on the subject.
