Trouble converting and playing XVID

Hi I am new to this game, I am using a Mac and I am having trouble watching files with the XVID format. Ive tried using divx, real, VLC and quicktime players.

If I cannot play Xvid how can I convert it to AVI or Mp4 so that I can view it?

Also If I burn Xvid to disk which program should I use so that it is possible to play on a normal DVD player.
