About ps2 modchips?

Do the modchips work like the psx modchip?

Can you just stick any copied game in and play it or do you need something like a boot cd?

And if you need a boot cd what happens if you need to change the cd without turning the unit off?

Any answers will be greatly appreciated because no one in Australia knows any information about this.
