Fifa 06 Multiplayer help

i play with a friend on fifa 2006 multiplayer through direct ip connect... and we both have broadband but the game gets pretty laggy n runs pretty slow? we live pretty close to each other aswell, ports have been forwarded and firewalls disabled? does anyone know how 2 make it faster? and also how to change multiplayer settings, like time limit and stuff?
