The easiest way is to just ZIP/RAR the entire Half Life 2 directory (or wherever you STEAM files are located) and burn the archive to a DVD-R/RW, then when you want to install it again just UNZIP/UNRAR it to a folder and run the STEAM.EXE to login to your account and get access to you games again.

There is also an option to backup your files in STEAM. Load up STEAM, goto My Games and right click on the game you want to backup then click 'Bakup game files' and follow the prompts.
