C&C Generals Online problems

Hey, i'm a new member, and i realise this subject has probably been brought up quite frequently, but i really want to get to the bottom of this, for pride mainly. Hope you can help, thanks

I have once owned my own copy of C&C Generals, and it is still installed. My problem is that my disk has snapped, and i'm trying to save myself the money of buying a new copy. I have already downloaded a game.exe nocd file and exchanged it with my old one, which means i can now play single player without the cd. But, my main interest in the game is the online function, i have also installed and tried different patches, and also tried a reccomended game.dat file, which didn't let me load my game at all.

I would really like to save myself the money of buying a new copy, and have the pleasure of getting online to work without one. Help would be much appreciated, thanks....
