relationship between burning speed and success rate

I burn cd-r at 48x which is my max speed. Dvd's i burn at 8x using a dual layer LG burner. I agree with Lufcfan, It mostly depends on the writer although most new burners, even the cheap ones, wont burn at 1x or 2x.
