Half life 2 DVD retail Update

I've got the vengence DVD retail version of half life and the offline mode works well, at leaste the first level I saw, but I know there are alot of official updates(through STEAM) and Vengence fixes, which ones do I need? all I want is to play the latest version in the single player mode.
