Jap V10 Laser Issues?

Okay, here's an odd cookie for you to chew on.

I installed a Matrix Infinity in my Buddies Jap V10 a while back and all of a sudden it stopped playing US DvD's (claiming wrong region), would only play Regionless (homemade) discs. Now it won't even play those! It just goes to the browser and when you see the disc it acts like it's gonna start up then nothing.

It plays ALL Games, backups/PS1/PS2DVD/PS2CD games just fine. It just is useless now as a DVD player. I didn't believe him till I saw it firsthand.

My best guess is that the laser is wearing out, but wouldn't that make the games unplayable also?
