WH40K no cd with mod issues

i cant seem to connect in direct connect game with friend using any mods at all..getting different version errors. My game is retail, he is using backup. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Version errors on menu screen match exactly, neither of us has mods installed that the other doesnt.
