problems w/ ripping certain games

Why is it that sometimes it's problematic to rip (don't know if that's the word, but I mean make an ISO file out of a CD) certain games? Sometimes the CD keeps "speeding up and down" but it haven't reached even 1 % of the ripping process a single time, I've tried w/ MagicISO, Alcohol (just BF1942) and CloneCD maybe I haven't waited long enough, but the games that works is much faster...

some games that this (does not ) happens on:
HoMM3 Armageddon's Blade
Battlefield 1942
FlatOut

can't think of anymore right now...

*edit*
just read at GCW that I am supposed to set the read speed to 1x (176 kBps) max 8x, and actually I think that is the speed that (1x) appears when I rip is everything like it should be then? and what if it stilll don't work?
