Is STEAM worth it on 56K?

I've read different posts on this forum and others and people have mentioned anywhere from 6MB to 50MB of registration files that need to be downloaded the first time you register Half-Life2 over STEAM. Has anyone here tried activation with a 56K connection?

I am waiting for the HL2 retail price to come down before I buy it but I'm still curious about the pain of activation over a dialup connection.
